Dialogue on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

More than 15 years after Indonesia as one of the signatories in the Cairo commitment has shown progress in meeting the sexual and reproductive health and rights of its people. The newly endorsed Law on Health no 36 /2009 has included many aspects of reproductive health. This law, however, needs to be disseminated to wider communities, if not all population, to build better understanding and comprehension on the people’s rights that is covered by the law and its implication to the state’s obligation.

Taking the opportunity of the the ICPD Cairo in 1994, concerns related to Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights are still relevant for Indonesia. MMR is still ‘unacceptably’ high, while HIV and AIDS is steadily increases. Unsafe abortion which believed to contribute to the high MMR, has not been properly addressed. Apart from that, SRHR/HR concept, understanding and comprehension among the community including activists, health providers, and even policy and decision makers seem to be lacking.President of The International Women’s Health Coalition, Ms. Adrienne Germain’s visit to Indonesia, the Women’s Health Foundation (Yayasan Kesehatan Perempuan) with the support of UNFPA is organizing a half day dialogue on the concept of sexual and reproductive health and rights and to what extent the newly endorsed Law on Health no 36/2009 has captured the issues.
